School
shootings. Suicide. Violence. Gangs. Drugs. All of this and
more can be found on Americas school campuses today. This
is not new to our schools, however, today they are more prevalent
and the harm caused is more widespread. Recent tragedies have
brought to the forefront the need for students and their family
members to have a safe and anonymous vehicle through which to
report suspicious behavior or activities. Several recent school
tragedies have uncovered a pattern. In most instances fellow
students were aware of the threat or danger beforehand and could
have alerted a teacher or administrator had they felt they could
do so without repercussion.
IDAP
Information Systems has developed a Tip Line or Help Line that
enables students, parents, family members and community members,
to anonymously report behaviors or activities that they feel
warrant intervention. What's even more significant is that
once the information has been left by a caller, the Tip Line
itself immediately notifies designated personnel so they can
take appropriate action.
Feedback
from students and school administrators has shown that callers
feel more comfortable leaving confidential information on a
"local" tip line, knowing that someone locally will
be taking care of the situation or problem. The personalized
aspect of calling ones own school Tip Line or a local
district Tip Line is more comfortable for them.
"We don't have a crystal ball. The Tip Line is one
way to help make our students feel safer. The fact that it is
anonymous and available 24/7 makes is very user friendly."
